A few highlights of Mexico so far

Just to sum up a few highlights of the trip so far. Mexico City is a urban architect nightmare as the other big cities that we have seen so far in Mexico. The Antropology National Museum was very useful to learn a few things about the various indigenous civilizations that have developed in Mexico. In Plaza Garibaldi I negotiated a cost of 30 pesos for the song Cielito Lindo, performed wonderfully by a quartet of heavily moustached Mariachi. You can see them on one of the pictures I managed to upload. That was the most Mexican square of the city, even more than the huge Zocalo.
Acapulco was way too crouded and noisy to be the place for me and Michiel. We moved south towards Puerto Escondido. We decided to cut the trip in two and stopped in a place called Cuahy and from there took a taxi to the coast to Punta Maldonado, we'd asked at the tourist information office in Acapulco and the guy assured us that we would find accomodation, but after almost an hour of driving on a bumpy road in the middle of nowere the taxi stopped us in this little fishermen's village. No trace of a hotel, of a cabana, nothing at all. So I spoke to a group of fishermen sat on a patio preparing their nets and asked if one of them would give us a room for the night. After a bit of consultation a young man ordered his woman to clean up a room and the deal was done, 100 pesos for the two of us for one night.
After ten minutes we'd spend in the village everybody knew about us, but life went on undisturbed. The kids playing on the beach together with dogs chickens and very free range pigs. We had the best pescado for dinner, of course.Although that night I hardly managed to sleep because of the heat and the mosquitos Punta Maldonado has been one of the most amazing places I've been so far. Next morning we took the collectivo [ open top van where all the people sit on the back] and we met some more interesting people. I remember an old campesino that was going to work in the fields, he had huge white moustaches and was clutching a very long machete. Then a girl that must have been 20 with her two kids, their round belly and them too with white moustaches of the milk they were drinking from plastic cups.
After that we spent 6 days in a cabaña in Puerto Escondido, a surfers paradise, very laid back atmosphere, very nice sandy beach.Sixties music in the bars on the beach. We had a lovely time there. Michiel went scuba diving a couple of times and even saw some big turtle and barracudas. I simply roasted in the sun, drinking pina coladas and easting fruit salads,hmmm... We visited the lagoon of Manialtepec, where we saw lots of different birds, including a Peregrine Falcon and a couple of black iguanas.
From Puerto Escondido we went to Villa Hermosa, in the state of Tabasco, a place that doesn't really reflect the name it has... and then to the island of Cozumel. Very touristy place, packed with americans coming from cruise ships to go shopping on the island. It seems to be a good place to buy diamonds. It is also a world famous diving destination, and infact we have seen corals, colourful fishes of wich I don't know the name, a murena a barracuda and lots and lots of huge crabs and black butterflies. Now we´re in Merida, which is close to major Maya sites like Chichen Itza and Uxmal. We went to Chichen Itza yesterday, will stay a couple more days here and then we´ll move on to Valladolid, before we go to Cancun where we have our flight to Lima.
The picture above is a cabaña in Puerto Escondido, me and Michiel´s favourite place so far...
Hasta luego!
